British singer and co-founder of the glam rock band Cockney Rebel, Steve Harley, has died. The musician (“Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)”) died of cancer at the age of 73, Sky broadcaster reported. and BBC on Sunday, citing his family. “We know he will be missed dearly by people around the world,” said Harley’s daughter Greta.
The singer became famous in the 1970s, including with a cover version of the Beatles hit ‘Here Comes The Sun’. In the mid-1980s he sang the song “Phantom of the Opera” from the musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber with Sarah Brightman.
Early this year, Harley canceled all concerts for 2024 due to health reasons. “We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family,” Harley’s official Facebook page said. «The birdsong from his forest, which he loved so much, sang to him. His home was filled with the sounds and laughter of his four grandchildren.” (sda/dpa)
