The American oil company ExxonMobil found new oil and gas reserves off the coast of Guyana. (archive image)

The so-called Bluefin well is located in the southeast of the block at a depth of approximately 1,294 meters. It was said that the drillers had discovered about 60 meters of hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone.

Guyana’s rise as an oil and gas producer has intensified a centuries-old land dispute with neighboring Venezuela. This is about the region in western Guyana known as Essequibo. The conflict threatened to escalate at the end of 2023. During talks shortly afterwards, both countries agreed to resolve the border dispute without the use of force.

Approximately 125,000 of the 800,000 inhabitants of the former British and Dutch colony of Guyana live in Essequibo. Venezuela’s desires increased after oil company ExxonMobil discovered an oil deposit in the area in 2015. Venezuela also claims the waters in which new deposits have now been discovered.
