President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, invited the head of state of Colombia, Gustavo Petroand the Government of Saint Vincent, Ralph Gonsalveswith those who make up the trio Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac)for an “urgent in-person meeting” to address the violence crisis Haiti is experiencing.
This was reported by the Colombian presidency this Friday, when it revealed that Petro canceled this morning’s agenda to attend to “urgent government matters”, as well as a “communication” from Castro “convening an urgent presidential meeting of the Troika (of ) Celac to resolve the current the situation in Haiti.”
The Colombian presidency did not give more details about when and where this meeting will take place between the leaders of the three countries that make up the Celac troika, which is made up of a country that has a pro-interim presidency (Honduras), one that had it the previous year (San Vicente) and one that will have it in 2025 (Colombia).
This same Friday, the Colombian government expressed its “tremendous concern” over the violence experienced in Haiti, where it hopes the international community will help rebuild once normalcy is restored.
In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “tremendous concern over the escalation of violence, criminal activities and human rights violations that are undermining peace, stability and security in the Republic of Haiti”.
The Caribbean country has been immersed in a wave of violence for weeks armed gangs that control a large part of the country’s territory and this prompted Prime Minister Ariel Henry to announce that he would resign after a transitional council was formed to appoint his successor and pave the way for presidential elections to be held.
Violence worsened again in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area last Thursday attacks, robberies and arson of public institutions and private propertiesincluding the residence of the head of the Haitian National Police, after days of apparent peace.
Armed gangs continued their actions on a day when the curfew was extended once again in the department of Oeste, where Port-au-Prince is located and where a state of emergency is in effect from March 7 to April 3.
Given this situation, Colombia called for a “quick and coordinated solution that will ease the pain of the Haitian people” while it considered “important the support of the international community in the process of building a solution to the crisis in Haiti.” “and especially the support of countries and consultation forums of the region”.
