It’s safe to assume that most teams will be competing with some rather uneasy feelings at the World Women’s Curling Championships (which start Saturday in Sydney, Canada). The reason: the Swiss team around Skip Silvana Tirinzoni (44). The team is number 1 in the world, has been undefeated in four events at the World Cup and has won all four World Cup titles in a row since 2019 (no World Cup in 2020 due to Corona). A whole quartet of World Cup crowns? This is a record in curling history.
The unbeaten run of 36 World Cup matches in a row is almost even more impressive, because in curling even the top teams can afford a defeat, at least in the round robin.
Now the Swiss are back in top form. Are Tirinzoni, Alina Pätz (34), Carole Howald (30) and Selina Witschonke (25) even expanding the crazy series to title number 5? «The primary goal is a medal. Of course we know we have the potential to be at the top, but we don’t feel any pressure,” says Pätz. It sounded exactly the same in November prior to the European Championship. The result: European Championship gold. (MD)
