Israel and Lebanon have reached an agreement on the maritime border between the two countries. Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed a letter with the treaty, Prime Minister Lapid put his signature in Jerusalem.
The two countries, which have been at war since the State of Israel was founded in 1948, reached an agreement two weeks ago. Economic interests also play a role in the agreement: off the coast of both countries are natural gas fields that Israel and Lebanon want to exploit. How much gas is contained in these natural gas fields is not known.
The United States acted as an intermediary because the countries have no formal relationship with each other. Mediator Amos Hochstein expects both parties to stick to the agreement even if new heads of government come to power.
The mediator refers to the Israeli parliamentary elections on November 1st. The term of office of the Lebanese President ends on October 31.
