On February 26, agents of the State Criminal Investigation Department rang the doorbell of ‘Claudia Ivone’ – in reality the ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette (65), who had been wanted for thirty years. She does not defend herself against the arrest, but apparently asks the police if she can go to the toilet again.

She was allowed – and therefore given the opportunity – to warn Burkhard Garweg (55), another wanted ex-RAF man. According to “Spiegel” she wrote: “You have me”. She then flushed the SIM card down the toilet.

Garweg was able to go into hiding

Moments later, police stormed a trailer lot used by members of the alternative scene. But Garweg, who had posed as ‘Martin’ there, was already out of the woods. He hasn’t used his cell phone since Klette’s warning.

The head of the Lower Saxony state police, Friedo de Vries, tells Spiegel that the three hiding RAF terrorists, Klette, Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, have been dealing with their respective legends for more than 30 years. “Garweg must have looked very carefully at how he would react to an arrest such as Klette’s. He must have had a plan in mind for this case.”

The LKA boss suspects that Garweg has already created a new legend, with false names, a constructed CV and contacts who confirm this information.

Robberies and bombings

Burkhard Garweg is accused of committing robberies armed with burdock and dust. Klette is also charged with attempted murder and bombings. On March 27, 1993, the RAF commando “Katharina Hammerschmidt” carried out an explosive attack on the newly built prison in Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, which was not yet occupied by prisoners.

In addition to Klette, the commando also included the wanted former RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. The explosion of several explosives in the prison caused damage worth 123 million German marks. (neo)
