South Africa threatens civilians fighting for Israeli army: “If you come home, we will arrest you”

Naledi Pandor, 70, South Africa’s foreign minister, has issued a threat to the soldiers fighting in Gaza. “I warn those who are South Africans and are fighting alongside or in the Israeli Defense Forces. We are done. If you come home, we will arrest you,” Pandor warned on Sunday during a solidarity conference with Palestinians in Pretoria. The threat finally made the news on Wednesday.

This is not the first warning from the South African government. In December, the State Department announced that alleged violations of international law would make Israeli soldiers “criminally liable in South Africa.”

Possible revocation of citizenship

To fight for the Israeli army, South Africans also need government approval, the report said. Naturalized South Africans would also risk having their citizenship revoked if they participated in the war that South Africa “does not support or agree with.”

South Africa has strongly condemned Israel’s strong military response after October 7. So far, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the bombings and ground operations. South Africa is therefore strongly committed to a permanent ceasefire. The country has also sued Israel before the International Court of Justice for alleged genocide. (Mrs)
