There are further delays in German rail transport on Tuesday.

The trains on the Swiss route network are running as planned, the SBB announced on Sunday evening on the online portal X. The Swiss railway company advised against rail travel to Germany during the strike.

In Germany, passengers must take major restrictions into account. The DB has drawn up an emergency timetable that safeguards approximately one fifth of long-distance train traffic. Deutsche Bahn’s regional transport and S-Bahn are also affected. The offerings there can vary greatly depending on the region.

Deutsche Bahn appealed

Even after the strike ended on Wednesday, passengers should continue to expect train cancellations and delays. The freight transport strike started on Monday evening. This is already the sixth industrial action by the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) in the current collective bargaining round.

On Monday, the railway company tried unsuccessfully to have the strike halted in court – and then announced it would appeal to the Hessian State Labor Court. The appeal is not expected to be heard until around noon on Tuesday, after the strike begins. If the Hessian State Labor Court decides differently from the Frankfurt Labor Court, the GDL would have to suspend its strike. However, this would not mean an immediate end to restrictions on passengers.

Same pay, less work

The previous GDL strike only ended on Friday last week and the union announced the next strike on Sunday evening. Business representatives criticized the actions as an abuse of the right to strike and a burden on Germany as a business location. The railway spoke of an unreasonable expectation for millions of train passengers and the economy.

The union is fighting for higher salaries and fewer working hours at the railways. The core of the conflict remains the demand that shift workers only have to work 35 hours for the same money instead of the current 38 hours. (SDA/obf)
