The death toll has risen to four after heavy storms in southeastern France. Another body was found on Monday morning in Dions near Avignon, the prefecture of Gard announced via X, formerly Twitter.
It could be a father who has been missing since Saturday, broadcaster BFMTV reports. There is still no trace of his two children.
The reason for the storm was the depression “Monica”, which caused heavy rains and flooding last weekend. Rain caused a landslide in Nice. Severe weather warnings were still in force in several regions on Monday and there was a risk of avalanches in some Alps. Several thousand households north of Nice in the border region with Italy were temporarily without power this weekend.
Authorities reported three deaths on Sunday. Two people were found in a car. The third victim was swept away by the water in his SUV in Gagnières, also near Avignon, early on Saturday evening. The man wanted to cross a bridge by car, “Le Figaro” reported.
Another prisoner was able to save himself. Seven people had previously been reported missing. According to media reports, a number of people drove over bridges that were already closed. (rbu/sda/dpa)
