The US embassy in South Africa warned this weekend of a possible terrorist attack in the economic metropolis of Johannesburg. Terrorists may be planning an attack on large crowds in the Sandton business district in the north of the city, a statement said on Wednesday. “There is no further information about the time, method or target of the possible attack,” it said.
Sandton is home to a popular shopping center, among other things. A Pride parade is also planned in Sandton on Saturday.
The US warning was specific to Saturday. According to the diplomatic mission, embassy employees should be careful throughout the weekend and avoid crowds. South Africa has a high crime rate – including many violent crime – but a terrorist attack would be unusual. (sda/dpa)
