The driver who injured several people in the Polish city of Stettin on Friday is said to have deliberately driven into the group of people. The TV news channel TVN24 and the PAP news agency reported this on Saturday, citing the Public Prosecution Service. They have initiated criminal proceedings against the 33-year-old Polish citizen for attempting to murder a large number of people and for deliberately causing a catastrophe.
Authorities have now corrected the number of injured from 19 to 20. One person only went to a hospital a little later, it was said.
The perpetrator initially drove into a group of people at a tram stop on Rodlo Square in the port city of Stettin. He then fled the scene of the accident and shortly afterwards rammed three other vehicles with his car, injuring more people.
According to authorities, the twenty injured are between five and 62 years old. Hospital spokespeople told media that six of the injured were in “critical” or “serious” condition.
The police announced on Friday evening that the man from Stettin has been receiving psychiatric treatment for four years. (sda/dpa)
