Suspected perpetrator arrested after bloody crime in Germany: Soldier allegedly shot 4 people – including a child

Shock in Germany: A Bundeswehr soldier is suspected of shooting four people in Rotenburg (Wümme) in Lower Saxony, northern Germany. Rotenburg police and the Verden Public Prosecutor’s Office said a child was among the dead discovered on Friday. Investigators initially provided no further information about the victims – such as their age, gender or their relationship to the suspect.

There are two crime scenes: one in a single-family home in Westervesede in the municipality of Scheessel and one in Bothel in the Rotenburg district.

Ex-girlfriend among the dead

Investigators said the alleged attacker turned himself in Friday evening after the crime and was arrested. “A motive in the family environment cannot be ruled out.” As “Bild” reports, the victims include the shooter’s ex, her new boyfriend and his mother.

In the morning there was also an operation at the Von Düring Barracks in Rotenburg. The Jägerbataillon 91 is stationed there. Detectives are examining a vehicle for clues in front of the barracks, the dpa reporter notes. The Public Prosecution Service initially did not provide any information about whether the suspect’s weapon came from the possession of the Bundeswehr. (SDA/jmh)
