Only found after 40 hours: investigators had overlooked a bazooka in the apartment of RAF terrorist Klette

Imprisoned: Daniela Klette was on the run for thirty years. She was arrested on Monday in an apartment in Berlin.

RAF terrorist Daniela Klette (65) lived in hiding in Berlin for more than thirty years, until detectives stormed her apartment on the fifth floor of a house in Kreuzberg on Monday evening and arrested her. The shelter was then searched. Up to 25 officers combed the apartment, Tagesspiegel reported. And yet it took 40 hours for Klette’s arsenal to be found. A pistol, a Kalashnikov and even a rocket-propelled grenade were discovered in an unlocked cupboard.

An anonymous source tells the newspaper that things got “bumpy” after Klette was arrested. Details are not known. One thing is clear: Shortly after the arrest, investigators found a gun and ammunition in the apartment. It is also unclear why the unlocked cabinet, which contained additional weapons, was not opened.

There are also alleged accomplices in Berlin

Klette’s house was evacuated because of the finds. Sometimes people were taken to safety in a building across the street and the street was partially closed. All residents can now return to their apartments.

Meanwhile, the LKA has intensified the search in and around Berlin for the two former RAF members Burkhard Garweg (55) and Ernst-Volker Staub (70), who are still wanted and with whom Klette is said to have carried out the attacks. The researchers therefore suspect that the two wanted people could be in Berlin.

Terrorists are supported

Due to the weapons and explosives found, it is believed that the fugitive dust and cooking waste from the two unidentified apartments could also pose a danger to the public. The Verden Public Prosecutor’s Office and the LKA from Lower Saxony continued to ask the public for help in finding the fleeing suspects, but at the same time called for vigilance and caution.

After Klette’s arrest, the Association of German Criminal Investigation Officers (BDK) took over support for the 65-year-old from left-wing extremists. He considers it “very likely” that Klette “received support from the left-wing extremist spectrum” during her escape that lasted more than thirty years, BDK chairman Dirk Peglow told the Germany editorial network. Without support, Klette “would probably have been arrested sooner.” This also applies to cooking pad and dust.

From the BDK boss’s point of view, logistical support for the three former RAF members is likely. This could have been in the form of vehicles, weapons, apartments and even money, Peglow explained. “That needs to be clarified.” The BDK boss considered the fact that law enforcement authorities “didn’t stop” as a “success” and a “good sign”.
