With films like ‘The Flash’ and ‘Aquaman 2: Lost Kingdom’, the DCEU ended 2023 rather ingloriously, especially from a financial perspective. It remains to be seen whether James Gunn can reignite interest in the comic book world with a fresh DC universe after just a short hiatus. The “Creature Commandos” and “Waller” series will kick off its DCU in 2024.
But it won’t really hit theaters until 2025, for which Gunn has chosen one of the greatest DC icons of all time: Superman will flit across the big screen again in ‘Superman: Legacy’. Or at least that was the title by which the film, written and directed by Gunn himself, was previously known. But now the comedy blockbuster has been given a much simpler name: The new Superman movie will now simply be “Superman” to be called.
James Gunn made this known on the occasion of the first day of filming yesterday, February 29, 2024 (which also happens to be Superman’s birthday): “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the movie ‘Superman: Legacy’. When I finished the final draft had, it was clear that the title would be ‘Superman’,” Gunn said in his message:
This is obviously not the first time that the reboot of a series simply bears the title of the very first film (see, for example, “Scream” or “Halloween”, where it was even more confusing because they were also sequels). Nevertheless, in future discussions (and also in our daily work as film journalists), we must first clarify whether we are talking about James Gunn’s Superman film or Richard Donner’s first Superman cinematic adventure from 1978.
First, look at the new Superman costume
However, the title change isn’t the only thing James Gunn’s Instagram post has in store. He also teased the look of the costume in Henry Cavill’s follow-up with an image section David Corenswet (“Hollywood”) will be released. The snow on the suit also indicates that Gunn’s “Superman” will once again head to the icy fortress of solitude, where Clark Kent liked to retreat in previous adventures and where he also learned a lot about his past.
However, the new ‘Superman’ shouldn’t be just another origin story about the Man of Steel. Instead, Superman would have already made a name for himself here, even if he is slightly younger than the Cavill version. What exactly it will be about is – unlike the cast – still a big secret.
In addition to the protagonist David Corenswet, there is also “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, ex-X-Man Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, “The Rookie” Agent Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern, “Madame Web” Spider-Woman Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl, “Twilight” vampire Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt aka Mister Terrific and “House Of The Dragon” heir apparent Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.
