Ex-president acts as puppet master: the last bastion against Trump falls

Donald Trump could soon shape his party to his own taste.

A piece of American history is coming to an end: Mitch McConnell (82), Republican minority leader in the US Senate, resigns after the presidential elections in November. In this position he shaped American politics for almost twenty years. Just two days earlier, the chairwoman of the Republican Party, Ronna McDaniel (50), announced that she would be leaving office. Co-chairman Drew McKissick (55) is also resigning from his position.

This departure will create three important political positions within the party that need to be filled. Donald Trump (77), ex-president and Republican presidential candidate, is happy with that. Because McConnell and McDaniel were not among his supporters. And Trump already has a plan for how to finally transform the Republican Party into the “Trump Party.”

Focused on the Senate

Mitch McConnell is part of the Republican old guard. Although he rarely opposed Trump and his “Make America Great Again” zealots, he was never a friend of Trump. He was also the one who blamed Trump for the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. ‘There is no doubt whatsoever – not the slightest – that President Trump bears practical and moral responsibility for what happened that day McConnell said.

But with Trump on the brink of a comeback, McConnell is opting for a retreat rather than a renewed defense of the party’s traditional values. “Believe me, I know what the current political situation is in my party,” he said on Wednesday. “I have a lot of weaknesses. Misinterpreting political signals is not part of that.” In doing so, he leaves the political battlefield to Trump.

Meanwhile, John Cornyn (72), John Thune (63) and John Barrasso (71) are in the race to succeed McConnell. Rick Scott (71), who challenged McConnell after the 2022 elections, is also likely to be a candidate. All four candidates have something in common: they are all close to Trump – and loudly support him in the election campaign. So if one of these gentlemen succeeds McConnell and Trump becomes the next US president, Trump will more or less control the US Senate. That’s the master plan.

McDaniel also needs to make room for Trump fans

But there are signs of a change in power, not only in the Senate, but also in the party leadership. The withdrawal of chairman Ronna McDaniel marks the transformation of the ‘Grand Old Party’ into a party that increasingly follows Trump’s vision.

Because Trump already has a plan here: he plans to appoint his close ally Michael Whatley (55), the head of the Republicans in the American state of North Carolina, as chairman. He supported Trump, among other things, by claiming that his victory in the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him through massive fraud.

Trump even appoints a family member as co-chairman: his daughter-in-law Lara Trump (41). Until now, she has mainly acted as a political commentator for the right-wing American broadcaster Fox News.

Trump, the puppet master

This makes it clear: “The trend within the Republican Party is towards Trump,” says CNN correspondent Ronald Brownstein (65). “The idea that there are people in the party who oppose many of the more extreme things that Trump wants to do — whether it’s withdrawing from NATO or minimizing our participation or a massive, militarized deportation force — will become a reality during a second term. will be much less strong.”

Trump becomes the mastermind of the ‘Grand Old Party’ – and day by day the opposition in the Republican Party is decreasing. A party that has worked for decades to build power as an institution is now mainly at the service of one individual.
