American Democratic voters living in Switzerland will vote next week for their candidate in the November presidential election. Joe Biden is the only candidate in the race, as the only opposing candidate on the ballot dropped out of the race in early February.

Marianne Williamson, an author and politician from Texas, was the only candidate seeking to challenge the incumbent president for the nomination for the expat ballot. She officially withdrew from the race on February 7 after a disappointing result in Nevada.

Her name will still appear on the ballots distributed at voting centers of the so-called Democrats abroad on March 5 – Super Tuesday – in Geneva and on March 9 in Basel and Zurich.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, more than 20,000 US citizens live permanently in Switzerland. According to Democrats Abroad figures, 768 of them participated in the 2020 Democratic primaries.

Overseas Democrats will nominate 17 of the 4,532 delegates who will attend the U.S. Democratic Convention in Chicago in August.

Democrats Abroad, however, emphasize the influence these votes have on the outcome of the nomination. They pointed out in a statement that a vote cast by US citizens abroad carries up to four times more weight than a vote registered in one of the country’s states, due to the smaller number of voters.
