The supply of blood products in Switzerland remained stable in 2023 despite fluctuations. The number of blood donations fell slightly to 0.6 percent. The SRK blood donation recorded a new record number of transplants.
A total of 328 blood stem cell transplants took place, the blood donation organization of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) announced on Tuesday. That is 14.3 percent more than last year. 199 donations came from unrelated people and 129 from family members. Almost all donations from non-family members came from abroad.
In return, there were 81 blood stem cell donations for unrelated recipients in Switzerland, eight fewer than in the previous year. At the end of the year, 183,000 people were registered in the blood stem cell donation register. The increase of 5,000 potential donors was below the values of previous years.
The number of blood donations fell by 0.6 percent to 263,702 in 2023 compared to the previous year. Blood consumption in hospitals also decreased due to more targeted use. Meanwhile, costs for the blood donation service rose. He had to constantly adjust tests for blood-borne diseases, such as West Nile and dengue viruses.
In addition, it has reportedly become more difficult to receive blood donations. Blood donation services have therefore expanded mobile campaigns by 14 percent, while at the same time the number of donors has decreased by eleven percent over the past five years.
According to the organization, one reason for this is the lower donation numbers at corporate events due to the home office and at universities due to online lectures.
