Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis received Laotian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith in Bern on Monday for an official working visit. The focus of the discussions was on the development of bilateral relations, Switzerland’s partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the geopolitical situation.
Political, economic and consular relations between Switzerland and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have intensified in recent years, as the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced on Monday. This dynamic is in line with the objectives of the Federal Council’s Southeast Asia Strategy 2023-2026, which aims to strengthen Switzerland’s relations with the countries of this region.
Switzerland’s participation in several high-level meetings of ASEAN, chaired by Laos this year, was also the subject of the discussions, as well as development cooperation. (dabbing/sda)
