With her ups and downs in love life and her weight, as well as her inimitable clumsiness and unhealthy consumption of Chardonnay and cigarettes, Bridget Jones became a cult figure in the 2001 romantic comedy ‘Bridget Jones – Chocolate for Breakfast’. The key dates for the fourth some of the popular novel adaptations have now been determined.
As the British newspaper ‘Mail on Sunday’ reports, among others, filming for a fourth film will begin in May in London, 23 years after Helen Fielding’s heroine was first seen on screen. Pre-production is said to be in full swing.
Oscar winner Renée Zellweger, who will once again play the title role, is said to be already looking for a house for herself and her boyfriend, British television presenter Ant Anstead. The two will live there during their time in Britain for filming. During previous recordings she rented a bachelor pad in Kensington, West London. But this time, the couple is looking for something bigger, according to the report.
Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, who played love rivals Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver in the first two films, are also expected to return to their roles in some form. In the third film, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” Jones married attorney Mark Darcy and had a baby — which, after some back and forth, actually turned out to be his. Hugh Grant did not appear in this film, as Daniel Cleaver was presumed dead at the beginning. However, at the end of the film there was a newspaper report stating that he had been found alive.
The new and fourth film is made eight years after the third part and is again based on a novel by Fielding. In “Bridget Jones – Crazy About Him” from 2013, Bridget Jones is in her early fifties, a single mother of two small children and looking for a partner via dating apps. However, her husband Mark Darcy is dead in the book and Jones is his widow. It is unknown whether the film adaptation will continue to comply with this.
In 2001, Renée Zellweger slipped into Bridget Jones’ infamous granny panties for the first time. The Texan received her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the British cult figure. The comedy grossed the equivalent of almost 260 million euros at the box office – more than ten times its production costs. “Bridget Jones – Chocolate for Breakfast” was followed by the sequel “Bridget Jones – On the Edge of Madness” in 2004 and the late third installment in 2016.
