The smell of a ship with thousands of livestock on board in the harbor of the South African tourist metropolis of Cape Town has caused a stir. There was a strong smell of manure in the center of the city with five million inhabitants and in the surrounding area on Monday. According to city authorities, 19,000 cattle were on the ship en route from Brazil to Iraq.
The ship docked on Sunday in the port of Cape Town, which is directly adjacent to the city center. South Africa’s animal welfare organization NSPCA said it had inspected the ‘Al Kuwait’ and in a statement pointed out “the appalling conditions” of the animals that had been on board for two and a half weeks. The animals are therefore deeply covered in “feces and ammonia”. “The smell on board is unimaginable,” says the association’s veterinary advisor, Bruce Marock.
The city council initially assumed that the odor came from a faulty sewage system in Cape Town. It wasn’t until several hours later that authorities attributed the cause to the ship’s transporter. According to the city authorities, the ship left Monday evening and is now on its way to Iraq. (SDA)
