The use of smartphones and tablets should be fundamentally banned in Italian primary and secondary schools, including in the classroom. To this end, the right-wing government in Rome will issue new guidelines, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara (63) announced in the daily newspaper ‘Il Foglio’ (Thursday).

The minister of the smaller ruling party Lega justified this on educational grounds, but also on better protection of school staff. Valditara also referred to recommendations from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

“Defending the educational power means defending the principle of authority,” the minister said. “This principle is not only the basis of the school system, but also of the democratic system.” Valditara pointed to studies suggesting that cellphones and tablets can affect performance and fuel tensions between students and teachers. In addition, excessive use has a negative effect on a child’s memory, concentration and learning. He has not yet provided details about the new arrangement. (SDA)
