A 94-year-old Iranian man who hasn’t washed in at least 60 years has died. Amou Haji, who lived as a hermit, avoided soap and water for years because he was afraid it would make him nauseous.
Shortly after washing once at the urging of his villagers, he fell ill. He died a few months later.
The man, who lived in a small village in the southern province of Fars, has been dubbed the dirtiest man in the world by the media. According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, the man’s skin was covered with soot and pus, he was eating spoiled meat and drinking contaminated water from an old, rusty oil can.
In 2013 a short documentary was made about him:
A year later he was interviewed by the Tehran Times. In this interview he said, among other things, that his favorite food is porcupine and that he sleeps in a cave in the ground or in a hut that concerned neighbors have built for him.
He also said that a traumatic event in his youth was the reason for his life as a hermit.
