Six arrests after landslide in Turkey ‘Ukrainian President Zelensky’: shameful slip of the tongue about the German Tagesschau

A few days after the landslide at a gold mine in eastern Turkey that buried nine miners, authorities revoked the operator’s permits. Six people, including a top executive from Canada, were also arrested on Saturday as part of an investigation, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported.

The Çöpler mine in Erzincan province was previously jointly operated by US-based SSR Mining and Turkish company Lidya Madencilik.

Search and rescue efforts for the nine missing people continued, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar told reporters in Erzincan on Saturday. The miners were buried on Tuesday when a huge amount of earth fell into a valley next to the mine.

No environmental risks have been identified, Bayraktar said. Activists warned that cyanide and sulfuric acid could leak into nearby rivers, including one of Turkey’s largest rivers, the Euphrates. Cyanides are used to dissolve gold from rock. They are very poisonous. (sda/dpa)
