Norwegian peace researcher Johan Galtung dies at the age of 93. One dead, 11 injured in house explosion in Virginia

Norwegian peace researcher Johan Galtung has died and is considered a central figure in the development of peace and conflict research. He died at the age of 93, the Norwegian news agency NTB reported on Saturday, citing his son. A spokeswoman for the Oslo Institute for Peace Research confirmed the news.

Galtung, born on October 24, 1930, studied mathematics and sociology. In 1959 he founded the PRIO Institute for Peace Research in Oslo. Later he taught at Princeton University, among others.

In 1987 he received the Alternative Nobel Prize. The organizers honor him on their website as the ‘father of peace research’. He also left a formative mark in communication science: there he dealt with news factors, ie the criteria for selecting news.

Galtung wrote more than 150 books and more than 1,000 articles, NTB reported. In some conflicts he acted as a mediator. At times he also caused controversy and faced accusations of anti-Semitism, NTB reports. (sda/dpa)
