A new study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in the US shows that about 80 percent of Americans are constantly exposed to a chemical called chlormequat. This is found in Cheerios and Quaker oats. The highly toxic agricultural chemical can contribute to infertility, delayed puberty and altered fetal growth in animals, among other things, as the New York Post reports.

Between 2017 and 2023, EWG collected urine samples from 96 people. On average, the experts found more chlormequat in people’s systems than seven years ago. While in 2017 they were able to detect the chemical in 69 percent of all study participants, this time the value rose to 90 percent.

Also approved in Switzerland

The EWG finds the high, proven values of the participants worrying. The pesticide usually leaves a person’s system after 24 hours. However, from the high concentration found, the research group concludes that the American population must be continuously exposed to this substance.

Animal studies show that the pesticide leads to reproductive disorders and impaired fetal development. The research group has not yet been able to determine whether it also has negative consequences for people. The chemical chlormequat is used to strengthen grain and oat plants to facilitate harvesting. It changes the growth of the plant and thus prevents it from twisting. The chemical is therefore a plant protection product and is also approved in Switzerland.
