Why did Russia develop an anti-satellite weapon? “Berlinale against right-wing extremism”: protest on the red carpet

What exactly is Russia planning in space? The US government has now published new findings.
An article by

The US government has confirmed that Russia has developed a new anti-satellite weapon. However, this “does not pose an immediate threat to anyone’s safety,” John Kirby, spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, said Thursday. US media had previously reported that Russia was moving ahead with plans to station a nuclear weapon in space. This weapon could target satellites.

Moscow dismissed the reports as “malicious” and “unfounded”. With such accusations, the US government wants to put pressure on opposition Republicans in Congress to agree to the new multi-billion aid package for Ukraine, it was said.

Nuclear ambitions in space?

According to reports from various American media, the American secret services had information about Russia’s new nuclear ambitions in space. These capabilities could therefore target satellites and thus threaten national and international security.

According to information from the New York Times, Russia’s nuclear capabilities currently under discussion are still under development and have not yet been used. So there is no acute danger. Fox News reported that using nuclear systems against satellites could potentially eliminate U.S. military communications and intelligence services.

The New York Times also wrote that the US had informed Congress and allies in Europe of Moscow’s plans. However, it is conceivable that in Europe initially only Great Britain was inaugurated. The Americans maintain particularly close intelligence cooperation with this country.
