1:3 defeat. That hurts. Especially when you look at how the YB defeat against Sporting came about. All of Bern’s goals conceded came after avoidable mistakes. Goalkeeper David von Ballmoos made it one when he mowed down opponent Edwards as he bent past Von Ballmoos shortly before half-time, resulting in a penalty.

The YB goalkeeper seems correspondingly disappointed in front of the “Blue” microphone after the match. Von Ballmoos served: “We knew they were a good opponent and that we needed a perfect game. It just wasn’t, you have to admit that.”

The fact that YB failed to turn things around after the penalty (0-2) – despite Ugrinic’s quick goal – was due to the poor start of the second half, says teammate Sandro Lauper. “Very annoying, but not entirely undeserved, I must say. The 1:3 after the break pulled the plug on us a bit. There certainly could have been more.”

Von Ballmoos also sees it that way. Still, he is encouraging for the second leg in Portugal in a week’s time: “Our game wasn’t actually that bad. We simply made one or two too many mistakes. That will eventually kill us.” (par)
