After more than 91 percent of the votes had been counted, Suozzi received 53.9 percent, the American broadcaster CNN showed in a graph on Wednesday evening (local time). His competitor Mazi Pilip of the Republicans achieved 46.1 percent.

Now that the Democrats are gaining a seat in the House of Representatives, one of the two chambers of the US Congress, the balance of power between the two parties is shifting somewhat. Before this election, Republicans had 219 seats and Democrats had 212, according to the U.S. House of Representatives website. The situation is different in the second chamber, the Senate, where the Democrats have a narrow majority.

Until his expulsion in early December 2023, 35-year-old Santos served a good year as a member of a New York district in the US House of Representatives and presented himself as a supporter of former US President Donald Trump. His rise to the federal political scene was overshadowed from the start by allegations of fraud and deceit. He is said to have fabricated a large part of the CV with which he presented himself to voters in 2022.
