Explosions at several gas pipelines in Iran on Wednesday night. The incidents took place inland and in the south, state media reported. Authorities in the southern province of Fars say there are initial indications that sabotage was the cause of the explosion.
There was also an explosion on a key gas pipeline in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of the capital Tehran, state news agency Irna reported. The flames could therefore be seen for miles. In both cases the fires are under control.
The head of the Center for the National Gas Pipeline Network, Said Aghli, described the incidents as a terrorist attack in an interview with state television. The explosions took place around 1am. That evening, Oil Minister Javad Oji convened an emergency meeting with the security services.
There are currently no further details on the background or cause of the explosions. The Islamic Republic has been repeatedly targeted by acts of sabotage. Only in December did hackers attack the national payment system at gas stations. Iran’s nuclear program has also been the target of sabotage in the past. (SDA/no)
