Joe Biden presents himself on Tiktok emphatically nonchalantly, with his hands in his pockets.

About nine months before the American elections, President Joe Biden (81) made his debut on Tiktok. Biden’s campaign team posted a 26-second video on the online platform on Sunday, which is especially popular among young people. In it, the president spoke in a relaxed tone about the American election campaign and the Super Bowl, the last game of the American football league NFL, which took place on Sunday.

In the video, Biden is asked, among other things, whether he would rather watch the game itself or the show during halftime. His answer: he’d rather watch the game. The R&B star Usher (45) performed in the halftime show this year.

At the end of the video, Biden is asked – the rather unnecessary question – who he prefers as a future president: himself or the favorite of the opposition Republicans for the presidential candidacy, ex-president Donald Trump (77). “Are you joking?” replies a laughing Biden. And then adds: “Biden.”

Biden wants to appeal to young voters on Tiktok

The video platform Tiktok, owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, has been repeatedly criticized by US governments – both Biden and his predecessor Trump. Bytedance is suspected of giving the Chinese Communist Party access to user data. However, the Beijing government denies pressuring Chinese companies to hand over personal user data collected abroad.

US federal authorities have banned the Tiktok app on corporate mobile phones over data privacy concerns. The regional government in the American state of Montana also decided to ban Tiktok last year. However, this step was blocked by a judge.

However, Biden apparently sees Tiktok as an important tool to reach young voters before the presidential elections on November 5. The platform has long since overtaken other major networks such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in terms of usage times. Tiktok has over a billion users worldwide. (AFP)
