Spectacular video: Another volcanic eruption in Iceland – 3 kilometer long crack in the ground

A volcano erupted in southwestern Iceland for the second time this year on Thursday, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. This is the sixth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021.

Spectacular aerial photographs from the area show fountains of lava flowing from cracks in the ground. The eruption site is located northeast of the Berger Sýlingarfell, immediately north of the fishing village of Grindavik. The crack in the ground is about three kilometers long.

Blue Lagoon closed to visitors

The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, one of the country’s best-known tourist attractions, will remain closed to visitors on Thursday.

The first eruption this year started on January 14 and lasted about two days. The lava flows then reached the outskirts of Grindavik. The almost 4,000 residents were evacuated. Some houses were set on fire by the glowing lava flows.

Dams are intended to keep danger away from infrastructure

Icelandic authorities began building dams in November to keep glowing lava flows away from homes and key infrastructure.

There are more than 30 active volcanoes in Iceland. This makes the Northern European island an excellent destination for volcano tourism. (no)
