The government collects hundreds of millions more in road taxes

The government will collect hundreds of millions more in vehicle taxes next year. This emerges from figures from Statistics Netherlands. The federal and state governments expect a total of 6.8 billion euros.

A portion of the motor vehicle tax (vehicle tax) you pay goes to the state. Another part is transferred to the province.

Hundreds of millions more in vehicle taxes

Both the central government share and the provincial share were increased. This year a total of 4.9 billion in vehicle taxes will be paid to the state. That is 7.5 percent more than a year before. The vehicle tax rate excluding provincial surcharges (the amount the province charges on top of the government tax) will increase by 10 percent. The states receive 1.88 million euros. That is 4.4 percent more than in the previous year.

If we compare the total revenue from this year’s vehicle tax to last year, the state receives 6.6 percent more vehicle tax. This corresponds to a total amount of 6.8 billion euros.

You pay the most in these provinces

Residents of South Holland and Gelderland will pay the highest vehicle tax in 2024. In the table below you can see the calculated rates for a gasoline car weighing 1,200 kilograms. In the two most expensive federal states you pay 716 euros in vehicle tax per year. North Holland is the cheapest place to own the example car.

Electric cars are currently exempt from vehicle tax, but that is set to change soon. You will pay from 2025 but will still receive a discount. Electric cars will be fully taxed in 2026 unless the rules change.
