It is no longer a surprise: Xi Jinping remains in office for a third term as leader of the Chinese Communist Party. That became clear yesterday on the final day of the party congress. While expected, it is nonetheless noteworthy. But perhaps even more spectacular and above all mysterious was what happened the day before at the party congress. Shortly before Xi’s speech, the man next to him, his predecessor, former President Hu Jintao, was taken away in front of the camera.
