Ukraine is hardly holding the front: the Russian minister talks about conquering territory

“Our units are advancing, expanding the zone under their control and improving their position on the front line,” the minister said at a meeting in Moscow on Friday. The Russian army captured the villages of Tabaivka and Krokhmalne in the Kharkov region of eastern Ukraine, as well as the village of Wessele near Bakhmut in Donbass, Shoigu said.

However, the combat situation in these villages with only a few houses was not entirely clear. There was heavy fighting for Tabaivka, but it was still in Ukrainian hands, the military spokesman for the front section there said on Kiev television on Friday. “There are artillery duels.”

The Ukrainian General Staff also reported Thursday evening that Tabaivka had been shelled by Russian artillery, meaning there were Ukrainian defenders in the village. However, other Ukrainian military observers pointed Tabaivka and Krokhmalne to the Russian side on Friday. The Russian advance in this area is part of their attempt to retake the city of Kupyansk, which was evacuated in 2022.

In the case of the village of Wessele northeast of Bakhmut, Russian sources had already claimed a conquest a few days earlier; Ukrainian observers still saw Wessele in Kiev’s hands on Friday.

“After the failure of the enemy’s counteroffensive, the Russian armed forces have the strategic initiative on the entire front line,” Shoigu said in Moscow. Ukraine, on the other hand, is throwing in its last reserves and mobilizing violently ‘so as not to collapse its defenses’.

In fact, the Ukrainian army is currently only holding the front with difficulty. The country is reportedly already facing a shortage of ammunition, while the supply of foreign supporters is still unclear.

Shoigu did not comment on the high Russian losses in ground fighting in recent months, which resulted in only relatively minor territorial gains. Ukraine has been fending off a full-scale Russian invasion for almost two years. (SDA)
