The World Cup winter will see one more retirement. On Thursday evening, Slovenian ski racer Stefan Hadalin announced via Instagram that he was ending his career at the age of just 28. The technology specialist justified his dismissal with persistent health problems. “Unfortunately, despite all the work, time and energy I have invested, I have reached the point where I can no longer do it. I can no longer ignore the feelings my body sends me.”

This is the second defeat in a very short time for the Slovenian Ski Association: Meta Hrovat announced her final resignation just over a week ago.

Exactly ten years in the World Cup circus

Hadalin made his World Cup debut in March 2014 in his hometown of Kranjska Gora and competed in 130 World Cup races (1 podium in the combined), three World Championships and the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. His greatest success came at the 2019 World Championships in Åre, Sweden, when he took silver in the alpine combination behind Frenchman Alexis Pinturault. In the current season, the slalom and giant slalom specialist did not reach the second run in any of his nine World Cup starts. The failure in the first run of the Kitzbüheler slalom almost two weeks ago was most likely his last appearance as a professional skier.

The Slovenian will be officially said goodbye to the Slovenian at the home World Cup on March 9 and 10 in Kranjska Gora. Exactly ten years and one day after his debut in the same place.

Mental health also plays a role

In addition to physical ailments, Hadalin’s career also put a strain on his mental health. “I can no longer deal with my emotional feelings. I can no longer bear the pressure of the competition rhythm in top sport,” the Slovenian continued on Instagram.

Hadalin has suffered from burnout complaints in recent years, which caused him to end the 2022 season prematurely. Although he started the current World Cup season with new hope and a new ski supplier, he is now drawing a line under his professional career.
