Alexei Navalny is a thorn in the side of Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin.

Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny (47) has called on his compatriots to protest against Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (71) in the presidential elections in March. His supporters should go to the polls at the same time on election day and form lines to express their protest against the Kremlin leader, Navalny wrote on Thursday in a message distributed by his team through online networks.

“This could be a strong demonstration of the mood in the country,” the Kremlin critic said. “People are lining up to protest against Putin.” Moreover, this type of protest is “legal and safe” and cannot be prevented by the authorities, Navalny added.

Navalny supports Nadezhdin

In Russia, anti-government demonstrations are consistently prevented by security forces. Navalny’s proposed protest will take place on March 17 at noon. The opposition politician demanded that his supporters vote for “all candidates except Putin.”

Navalny’s wife and some of his allies in exile are supporting Kremlin critic Boris Nadezhdin, 60, who wants to run against Putin. On Wednesday, Nadezhdin submitted the necessary number of signatures to run against Putin. The electoral authority must now decide whether he will be admitted to the elections.

Navalny has been in custody since January 2021

The presidential elections in Russia will take place from March 15 to 17. Putin recently confirmed his candidacy and is expected to easily win a fifth term.

Navalny, who is currently imprisoned in a penal colony, is considered Putin’s fiercest domestic political critic. After a poison attack, for which he blames the Kremlin, he traveled to Germany for treatment. In January 2021, Navalny returned to Russia and was immediately arrested.
