A mega yacht has now left the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen. As various media report, the “Luminance” was undocked on Tuesday and en route to Kristiansand, Norway. This is also evident from data from the Vesselfinder portal. At just over 144 meters in length, the ship is one of the 15 longest superyachts in the world and is estimated to have cost $500 million (432 million Swiss francs).
As usual in the industry, no official information is provided about the ship’s owner. But there are rumors – and they have been persistent for a long time. As the New York Times, among others, reported in May 2022, the ‘Luminance’ is said to be owned by the Ukrainian businessman and former MP Rinat Akhmetov.
He is considered the richest person in Ukraine. His fortune is estimated at approximately $5.7 billion (4.93 billion francs). Other reports speak of a fortune of more than ten billion dollars.
Work on the ship started in 2017. The ship was transported back and forth between the company’s various shipyards several times until final delivery took place. It remained unclear why the mega yacht is now on its way to Norway.
Rinat Akhmetov earned his money as head of System Capital Management (SCM), an investment company that would include about a hundred companies. The network of companies is mainly located in the Eastern Ukrainian steel and coal industry. He also owns the steel mill in Mariupol, which was severely damaged by the Russian army.
Akhmetov recently made headlines for using harsh words to condemn Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine – an exception among the country’s oligarchs. He is also the owner of the Shakhtar Donetsk football club.
Akhmetov – if the rumors are true – and his guests can look forward to space for 24 guests, spread over four passenger decks. In addition, the “Luminance” has two whirlpools on the upper deck and a large swimming pool at the stern. There is also a large lounge area with panoramic views of the sea. The yacht also features two touch-and-go helicopter platforms.
