Europe has a new scientifically confirmed temperature record: 48.8 degrees were measured in Sicily on August 11, 2021, the World Weather Organization (WMO) confirmed on Tuesday after a lengthy investigation by an international panel of experts.
The previous record was 48.0 degrees, measured on July 10, 1977 in Athens and Eleusis. At the time, the WMO recognized the record without a lengthy review process.
According to the WMO, the new temperature record was set in the summer of 2021 by an automated weather station Syracuse in Sicily measured. The measurement data, measuring conditions and measuring equipment were examined in detail, meaning that the new temperature record for Europe was only confirmed two and a half years after it was established. The results of the study have been published in the International Journal of Climatology.
Europe is hit hard by climate change. The new temperature record shows “the alarming trend towards a continuation of record high temperatures in certain parts of the world,” said American geographer Randall Cerveny, the rapporteur on weather and climate extremes for the WMO. It is “likely that even more severe extremes will occur in Europe in the future.” (sda/afp)
