After the Houthi missile attack on a tanker in the Gulf of Aden, the fire on board has been extinguished. The Trafigura Group, on behalf of whom the tanker was traveling, made this known on Saturday, according to the British news agency PA.
The ‘Marlin Luanda’ was attacked by rockets from Yemen’s militant Islamist Houthi militia on Friday evening and caught fire. According to information, the firefighting efforts lasted all night.
The statement commended the efforts of the crew and thanked the support of Indian, French and American warships. The crew is safe. The ship is now on its way to a safe port, the report said.
The British government strongly condemned the attack, which the Houthis claimed as their own. “We have made it clear that any of these attacks on merchant ships are completely unacceptable and that Britain and its allies have the right to respond appropriately,” a British government spokesperson said.
The Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships since the start of the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. The militia acts in solidarity with Hamas and targets cargo ships with alleged Israeli connections off the Yemeni coast.
One of the most important shipping routes for world trade runs through Yemen, along which cargo ships from the Indian Ocean reach the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal in Egypt. In response to the attacks, the US and Britain carried out several military strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. (sda/dpa)
