The China Airlines pilots of flight CI 5116 must have looked at their speedometers in disbelief: their Boeing 777 accelerated to a whopping 1,329 km/h over the Pacific Ocean on Thursday!
China Airlines 5116 covered the distance of 11,595 kilometers in just 10 hours and 18 minutes, arriving in Los Angeles an hour earlier. The reason is a particularly strong jet stream, which is further strengthened by the climate phenomenon El Niño, the Washington Post reports. Apparently the wind reached almost 400 km/h and pushed the planes forward, similar to the passenger treadmill at the airport.
According to the newspaper, the machine traveled at an average speed of 1,126 km/h. This includes take-off, landing and all slower parts of the route. Normally the cruising speed of this machine is around 900 km/h.
A day later, a China Airlines plane reached almost the same speed as the record machine on the same route.
China Airlines may have broken the unofficial record for the fastest flight by passenger plane. An official list does not exist. The magazine “Simple Flying” reports that a British Air Boeing 747 near Greenland previously held the record of 1,327 km/h in February 2020.
There were super fast flights again on Thursday and Friday. Several aircraft from different airlines exceeded the 1,300 km/h limit. (neo)
