The wedding cake lay unnoticed at the bottom of the freezer for 55 years. “I came across this cake that I had completely forgotten about,” Rochelle Marr tells CBC about a cleanup with her son Travis Marr. “It has been taken from various freezers over time, so I thought I would take a closer look. There was a date or an inscription on the floor.”
The inscription read: “Do not open before 2018”. The Canadian and her husband Brian Marr actually wanted to enjoy the fruit cake on their 50th wedding anniversary. In Canada, according to CBC, it is traditional to keep the wedding cake – usually until the first wedding anniversary or the baptism of the first-born child.
But the couple from the province of British Columbia forgot about their joint project. Now only the woman has to be happy with the find, because her husband died in June last year. But she can share the excitement with her son, who urged her to remove the cake from the aluminum foil.
“It looks really good and smells great,” Rochelle Marr enthuses to CBC. So she decided to eat the cake quickly. “I know a lot of people wouldn’t do that and are skeptical about the shelf life of a fruitcake. But I did some research this morning and the oldest cake is about 161 years old.”
This is also confirmed to the broadcaster by Keith Warriner, professor of food safety at the Canadian University of Guelph: “It is very alcoholic and contains a lot of sugar and fat. The water content is quite low and because it has been stored in the freezer, there does not appear to be any microbial growth.” Even though it is safe, it can still be disturbing.
The family seems to accept a mild stomach upset. They also invited the couple’s other two children and their entourage to taste the wedding cake. Son Travis Marr is looking forward to the cake: “I think we want to have a little party.” (gs)
