German Bundestag simplifies deportations of foreigners without the right to remain German Bundestag simplifies deportations of foreigners without the right to remain

Deportations of foreigners without the right to remain in Germany should be made easier in the future. After a long tug-of-war within the ruling ‘traffic light coalition’, the Bundestag passed a corresponding law on Thursday evening.

For example, the legal maximum duration of detention upon departure is extended from the previous 10 days to 28 days. In addition, officials are now allowed to enter rooms in shared accommodations other than just the room of the person being evicted. In the past, deportations repeatedly failed because those affected could no longer be found.

The bill was briefly removed from the agenda in the last week of the session before Christmas as the Greens called for improvements. At their insistence, it is now being ensured that those affected receive a lawyer.

In addition, the law provides for stricter measures against smugglers. Due to protests from human rights organizations, a later passage is intended to make it clear that rescuing refugees at sea is not a punishable offense. (sda/dpa)
