AND 60.9% of the Salvadoran population considers him to be president and a candidate for immediate re-election by the ruling party New Ideas (NI), Nayib Bukelehe will win the next presidential election February 4according to a survey released this Thursday.
Survey results Institute for Public Opinion (Iudop) from the Jesuit University Centroamericana (UCA) also reveal that a 27.6% of people surveyed believes that NI will win the said elections, thus increasing the percentage in favor of Bukele to 88.5%.
Nuevas Ideas would also win a majority of MPs for legislative assemblysince 73.9% of the population believes that it will be so.
AND 50.4% of those surveyed believe that Bukele will win the elections thanks to his good work in the last five years, and 5.6% that he will do so in order to continue the emergency regime measure, which has been implemented since March 2022 to fight gangs.
47.6 percent of those surveyed believe that the ruling party would win the presidential elections because of a job well done, and 5.4 percent because it has the best candidate.
Only on February 4, 91.6 percent of citizens will go to the polls 6.8% they won’t, according to the poll.
Furthermore, the economy remains the main problem currently facing the country, followed by unemployment and the high cost of living.
Omar Serrano, Vice Chancellor for Social Projection at the University of CAhe pointed out during the presentation of the results that, according to what was analyzed, “we are heading towards elections characterized by general disinformation of the population in the electoral process, that is evident”.
He pointed out that elections are “the basis of democratic legitimacy”. However, “they are not the only ones and they are not enough to guarantee the quality of democracy”.
The Iudop survey was conducted between January 3 and 14 this year with a sample of 1,264 interviews across the country, with a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of plus-minus 2.76%.
There are six candidates for the presidency of El Salvador, including Bukele, who is the clear favorite to win the said elections, despite the fact that Current re-election is prohibited by the Constitution in this country.
The path to Bukele’s re-election is open in 2021, when the Sala de los Constitutional Court of the Supreme Courtwho was appointed without a legal procedure by the opposition-majority Congress, changed the criteria for interpreting the Constitution.
