The farmers’ protest week in Germany continues on January 8. Farmers across the country are once again mobilizing to demonstrate against cuts in agricultural diesel subsidies and inadequate conditions in food production. A large protest procession drives to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Other parts of the country are also affected by blockades. Certain parts of the highway are virtually paralyzed.

The ruling traffic light coalition had already accommodated the farmers after previous protests. The measure that made agricultural and forestry vehicles subject to tax was again scrapped. The reduction of agricultural diesel subsidies will now also take place gradually.

However, this could not stop the protests. Many farmers speak of built-up frustration about the difficult production conditions, which motivate the protests even beyond government measures. As of today, for the first time, members of the logistics sector have shown solidarity with the farmers and sometimes participate in the protest marches.

As the protests grow, the criticism becomes louder. On the one hand, the farmers’ actions are partly reminiscent of those of climate protesters and raise accusations of double standards. On the other hand, the growing movement is also increasingly visibly infiltrated by right-wing Reich citizens and is becoming increasingly radical.

In particular, the incident on January 4, when a mob tried to confront Vice-Chancellor Habeck on a ferry in Schlüttsiel upon his return from vacation and had to be stopped by police intervention, caused serious criticism.
