Stunning photos and dramatic video footage posted by passengers on social media show the extent of the plane’s destruction.

After the emergency landing of a Boeing 737 MAX 9 in the state of Oregon, the US aviation regulator FAA ordered immediate inspections of about 170 aircraft of this type. These would take four to eight hours by plane, the FAA announced on Saturday in the short message service X (formerly Twitter). The American airline Alaska Airlines had previously announced that it would temporarily ground its aircraft in the series.

“Out of an abundance of caution, all 65 Boeing 737-9s in our fleet will be withdrawn from service for the time being,” Alaska Airlines chief Ben Minicucci said. He cited the emergency landing of the plane with 177 people on board at Portland International Airport on Friday as the reason. Also the European

Child lost his shirt

The plane, flight number 1282, had taken off from Portland in the northwestern US and was en route to Ontario, California when, according to passengers, part of the cabin wall flew out shortly after takeoff. The plane then turned around and made an emergency landing in Portland about twenty minutes later. According to flight control, the cabin crew spoke of a “pressure problem”.

The Boeing 737-9 Max, which only entered service two months ago, was en route from Portland to Ontario. A passenger tells the TV channel that a child had to be held in his seat by his mother because of the pressure drop. Some passengers also lost their mobile phones, which were sucked out of the plane.

The child closest to the damaged part of the plane lost his shirt due to loss of pressure, an eyewitness said. This one was also injured. There are no reports of serious injuries.

737-Max was already on the ground

The incident is likely to alarm airlines and the manufacturer Boeing. The NTSB Accident Investigation Bureau is investigating the matter. In contrast to Friday’s favorable outcome, two emergencies in 2018 and 2019 ended catastrophically and led to the grounding of the 737 Max series. The two accidents resulted in a total of 346 deaths. The main cause is believed to be a faulty control program, which caused the machines to crash to the ground.

Boeing subsequently revised the type and gradually obtained recertifications. However, the medium-haul aircraft continued to make headlines with production errors and put pressure on manufacturer balance sheets.

Alaska Airlines has also expanded its fleet in recent years with an improved version of the 737-9 Max. In total, the airline has approximately 300 aircraft, mainly from Boeing.

No machines in Europe

The European air traffic control EASA has also responded and adopted the guidelines of the American FAA. However, no airline in Europe is currently “flying an aircraft of the affected configuration” of the 737-9 Max, Easa said in a statement. Several airlines such as Turkish, Polish Lot or TUI use 737 Max aircraft, but not models with the wrong configuration. (zis/noo/AFP)
