After 51 days of Hamas violence, 17-year-old Agam Goldstein-Almog was released on November 26 – along with her mother Chen (49) and her two younger brothers Gal (11) and Tal (9).
Now the young Israeli has published a video in which she talks in detail about her fear and the horrors while she was held hostage. “Many girls were severely sexually abused and suffered very serious injuries,” Goldstein-Almog said.
According to Israel, 129 hostages are still held by Hamas, including 19 girls and women. Goldstein-Almog could also have met these victims on the fatal day she now tells about.
“That day we walked from a house to a tunnel,” she says. «Suddenly a door opened and we met six girls. We realized they were girls who were alone. “Many girls have been seriously sexually abused, they have been injured – very, very serious and complex injuries that are not treated,” the young Israeli recalls. “They bandage their wounds themselves, or we helped them.”
After the family was released in late November, the mother said other hostages were not so lucky. Chen Goldstein-Almog also spoke about one of the shelters where they were housed with a group of female prisoners.
“Some were beaten and handcuffed for several hours,” she said in an interview with Reuters. “Not only men, but also women were beaten and we heard about sexual abuse, some firsthand. Others were girls we met who had witnessed it or heard about it.” They were ‘wounded at gunpoint’.
Goldstein-Almog was deeply concerned about the women left behind, some of whom were seriously injured. “They said they could deal with the physical injuries, but they didn’t know how to deal with the way they were sexually abused.”
Daughter Agam now confirms the trauma she experienced at the time: “I can’t even imagine the situation they are in and the hope they are clinging to,” the 17-year-old says in the video about her fellow prisoners at the time.
When you are held hostage, “you live with death. You don’t know when it will catch you and what it will look like, whether it will involve torture or whether you will simply be shot or bombed by the Luftwaffe. You’re constantly thinking about what death will look like.”
Hamas denies allegations of sexual abuse.
