A man armed with a machete was shot dead during a police operation in Austria. Officers went to a house in Bad Sauerbrunn, south of Vienna, where the fatal incident occurred on Friday because of a family dispute, police in the eastern state of Burgenland said.

The suspect then threatened his wife with a machete. He ignored police orders to put down his weapon. The use of pepper spray also had no effect, it was said. The man then attacked and injured a police officer. In this situation, the attacker was shot by the police.

There was no information available at this time about the man’s identity, a spokeswoman for the Public Prosecution Service told the DPA news agency. (SDA)
