They smell, are scary and just want to be thrown away as quickly as possible: full diapers. But a story from a couple from Great Britain proves that sometimes it’s worth it not to just throw them away carelessly.
Only because mother Stacie Hart looked at her son Jaxon’s full diaper last October saved his life. Metro.uk reports this.
While changing her 16-month-old baby’s diaper, the mother noticed that his urine was “very dark.” Stacie and her husband Ben didn’t hesitate and immediately took the boy to the emergency room.
They had to be patient there first. “We sat with a pot under Jaxon for four and a half hours, waiting for a urine sample, because babies don’t pee on command,” the mother told the British newspaper.
In the meantime, they wanted to send her home, but then the little one excreted ‘cola-colored’ urine.
The doctors then conducted several examinations and finally came to the conclusion that little Jaxon suffered from a so-called Wilms tumor. This is a tumor in the kidneys. “I didn’t know what a Wilms tumor was, but I knew they told me it was cancer.” Because it is an embryonic tumor, Wilms tumors mainly affect children under the age of five.
After the shocking diagnosis, the boy not only had to undergo five rounds of chemotherapy, but also had to have his kidney removed. Despite the hardships, the boy was fortunate in adversity. “Thank God his body gave us this sign with his urine,” the mother, who describes the whole thing as a Christmas miracle, told the newspaper.
According to Cancer Research UK, around 80 children in the UK develop a Wilms tumor every year. (dzc)
