The mayor of the southern Italian town of Cerignola, Francesco Bonito, has gotten himself into trouble with a liberal calendar for the new year. The official Cerignola calendar for 2024 features a dozen young women in miniskirts, tight shorts and tight tops on the respective calendar pages.

The local president of the women’s association Impegna Donna, Franca Dente, described on Thursday that it was absurd to show women in ‘swimwear’ in the middle of the city. Protests also came from the right-wing opposition in the centre-left governed city.
The city council justified itself by saying that last year they wanted to show participants in a ‘Miss Italia’ competition at historical places in the city. The photographer Giuseppe Belviso spoke of “artistic shots”. The photos were taken in the summer on the sidelines of the competition and then requested by the city for the calendar.
Cerignola is located in Apulia and has approximately 57,000 inhabitants. Bonito (74) has been mayor for two and a half years.
