Bomb threats: evacuations in parliament buildings in several US states Trump turns to the Supreme Court

Shortly before the third anniversary of the storming of the Capitol, parliament buildings in several US states were temporarily evacuated due to bomb threats. A corresponding threat in the form of an email sent multiple times was received in Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan and Mississippi, among others, on Wednesday (local time), US media reported, citing the responsible police authorities. This did not appear to be taken seriously. A short time later the buildings were accessible again.

“While everyone is safe, Kentucky State Police have asked everyone to leave the Capitol,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear wrote on Platform X. “We are aware of similar threats against other offices across the country.”

Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling warned X against drawing hasty conclusions about the background of the threat. “In 2024 there will be agents of chaos who will sow division,” he warned. “They want to increase tensions. Don’t let that happen.”

The presidential election will take place in the US on November 5 – and given the political violence surrounding the 2020 election, there are fears that serious upheavals could occur again. Supporters of then-President Donald Trump violently stormed the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021. Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Trump had previously incited his supporters during a speech by claiming that the election victory had been stolen from him through massive fraud. Five people were killed as a result of the riots.

Trump wants to run again for the Republicans in 2024 and is currently far ahead of his internal party competitors in surveys. President Biden is running for a second term under the Democrats – without serious internal competition. This could lead to another race between the two. Research shows that this could be scarce.
